The rhyme is said to have originated as a cautionary fable about the harm that can come when young people are disobedient, and was used by the first Christian Church in the form of a sermon on the subject. Humpty Dumpty was created by Edward Lear, an English author, illustrator, and painter.

The rhyme, which has been told in many versions, including versions in other countries and even other languages, is about a young man who rebels against his fathers instructions and breaks a number of rules. He is punished by being turned into a wooden sculpture. However, the main character in the story is the Three Billy Goats Gruff, who is able to bring back to life the rebellious man by singing a magical song. The tune which the song is sung to is an ancient Irish and Scottish Gaelic folk song.
