The modernist photographer Leon A. Dunn was one of the first to recognize her talent and passion. In his newspaper article, “Street Photographer Scores Triumph,” Dunn used the word “genius” to describe her. As the first female photographer working on the Chicago Sun-Times, the Sun-Times said she was the best “photographer of contemporary Chicago.”

She was an inspiration to many, her portraits, representing humanity, remain in many famous magazines, such as Vogue, Life, Cosmopolitan and Look. Her archives are preserved in the Library of Congress, New York Public Library, and Universities and colleges in the United States and in several countries, including London, Barcelona, Paris, Naples and Rome. In 2010 she was recognized by the City of Chicago with a Star on The Chicago Walk of Fame. The city also named the street she took her photos in the Loop as Margaret Bartlett Way.

In 2005, the Sun-Times said Bartlett “favored people not places.” She preferred a “people-centered view” and worked best when the subjects were “happy and posed.”

She had one complaint: If people loved the camera, they would have taken better photos.

Books

Bartlett published several books including The Chicago Streets (1978); The Child (1980); A Village Story (1983); the city of Chicago (1985), and the non-fiction book, Chicago Exposed (1992). Her images have been published in more than 100 books.

Awards

Bartlett received a number of awards, including the Silver Medal at the Life Photographers Award in New York, the Chicago Printmaker's Award in 1979, the Art Directors Club's Gold Medal in 1979, and was elected to the Photo-USA Hall of Fame.

Later life

Bartlett retired from photography in 1986, settling in Chicago. She died in 1999 at the age of 79.
