The mac1 example has been completed for a few months now, I've been meaning to get a new UI into it, but but good thing I did not. It really should work as a standalone example now given the new backend code, but it still has some problems, mainly a UI issue on Mac that I cannot figure out. Hopefully the new UI can be finished in a few days. This new example is using the new GUI and plugin toolkit methods.
As mentioned before, my colleague Lucas was instrumental in making the backend go the new way. It no longer depends on the operating system at all, but instead on the framebuffer. This allows plugin developers to write an abstract backend that runs on different framebuffers. Currently, there is a pipe based backend, an X11 backend, and a Wayland backend, which is only in the works. It is using libcarla to ask the OS for framebuffer events, no longer need to import tons of libraries in the plugin that can potentially crash the system.
To wrap, I've been trying to convince some of the Linux developers to do similar good work. I've received mixed waves of responses - but I am quite sure that if we get the X11 backend working right (which it mostly is), the pipe/wayland backend will be a piece of cake for DAW developers who don't want/need a full-blown desktop environment. Please note I cannot speak for Linux listener developers, this is just about Linux GUI development.
Exactly what any printer needs depends on the printer. Don't assume that a printer needs a certain amount of memory, for example. Some POS drivers have wizards for setting up a network. This means that the printer will know when it is connected to the network, what it is connected to, and which host it is connected to by looking at the IP address that is assigned to it. This can save you from having to set up the IP address yourself. Also, since the host is known to the printer, the printer can communicate directly with it, and avoid having to do a lot of handshaking on the network. d2c66b5586
