A problem in the field of internal combustion engines is that the air/fuel ratio of the mixture supplied to the engine can vary from a theoretical value of 14.7/1. Although certain types of engines are very tolerant of higher or lower air/fuel ratios than the theoretical value (14.7/1), other types of engines and other types of engine operations are not as tolerant.
In order to accommodate these less tolerant engines, it is known to utilize a system for measuring the amount of fuel in the fuel/air mixture supplied to the engine and to compensate the engine for an insufficient supply of fuel by controlling the amount of fuel injected into the engine. This system is commonly referred to as a closed loop fuel injection system.
In conventional closed loop fuel injection systems, the fuel/air mixture is measured in a fuel/air meter known as a fuel flow meter. The fuel flow meter includes a sensor to determine the amount of fuel/air mixture being supplied to the engine. The sensor is disposed in the fill and drain passage interconnecting a fuel supply conduit and a return conduit. When the amount of fuel in the mixture exceeds a predetermined value, the measured fuel concentration is used to adjust the rate of fuel injection into the engine.
In one known fuel injection system, a single valve is used to control both the supply of fuel and the return of fuel in the fill and drain passage. However, this can cause an abrupt change in the pressure and temperature of the fuel/air mixture in the fill and drain passage. This abrupt change in the pressure and temperature of the fuel/air mixture can cause improper operation of the fuel flow meter. In addition, improper operation of the fuel flow meter will cause the aforementioned improper fuel injection.
