But whereas Champion has often been bracketed with these two poets, he has little of their spirit in his way of working and would hardly consider himself a derivative. Even so, I have often thought that he might be a kindred spirit. Certainly, as mentioned, he was often ecumenical with respect to influence. The most obvious example would be his response to poetry. Early in his writing career, he was drawn to the August-tradition and the work of the greatest poet of the Augustan age, Publius Virgilius Maro. Therefore, Poem of the Open Hand (1989) is definitely prose and is as much an act of homage to Maro as is earlier work such as The Poetics of the Open Hand (1983). I can attest from my own experience of him that Champion is not at all shy of such tributes, be it to a dead poet or to a living one. Indeed, I think that he may be—as I suggested before—a kindred spirit to such poet-scholars as George Herbert, George Santayana, and Eliot. These poets, Champion claims, are his masters and he sticks close to the Eliot model of the art, which is to say, one that resonates with all the senses and thus produces a full, sensuous experience of the world. (I am sympathetic to this view as well because I have always been frustrated when the close reading of poets like Herbert or Santayana has to be done through the medium of academic interpretation. I consider them timeless.)
The poet’s part is to achieve “a perception and active apprehension” of the material world, and the best poets can achieve a totality of experience. In that respect, the standards for poetics remain the same and the champions do not generally differ in approach. Great poets, from Norman Mailer to Robert Penn Warren, are always both political and artistic. But the champion does diverge from the poetic tradition in that the prominent role he gives to perception and perception alone as the fount of meaning is not a post-romantic tradition, but revolves around the Categories of Thought, which includes—and in some sense the poetics of each champion is informed by this view—the Theory of Meaning. d2c66b5586
