Of all the strange films that came out of the early ’60s, there’s one that absolutely stands out as the weirdest of the weird: the 1977 Allen & Rossi film, Star In My Pocket—And In My Heart. Shot in India and spewed out to an American audience, it’s a mishmash of influences that never quite coalesce into a coherent statement, and its title alone is enough to twist up your tongue, tap dance on your brain, and yank you from your seat. Because if the title isn’t enough to peg you, then the second scene in the film—that’s right, it opens with a cut in mid-air when the protagonist is hanging off a skyscraper, a nonlinear narrative that leads to an odd moment when the director cuts to a golf course and inserts the scene of him getting hit by a golf ball
It’s an instinctual decision when walking into a forest to go there. You are compelled to explore the unknown, to see what you hadn’t even been aware of. I couldn’t imagine a better representation for this dizziness and chaos, which can be both exhilarating and frightening, simultaneously.
